Carbon footprint for SMEs: what it is and why they ask for it
A carbon footprint quantifies greenhouse gas emissions associated with your activity. SMEs typically start with direct fuels (and owned fleet) plus purchased electricity, and can later expand to the value chain (Scope 3).
What the market usually expects
Even without a strict legal obligation, it’s increasingly common for large clients, banks, public tenders and supply chains to request ESG evidence: footprint numbers, a reduction plan and traceable documentation. Being ready reduces commercial friction.
How it’s calculated (simple version)
- Collect activity data: electricity kWh, fuels litres/kWh, fleet, etc.
- Apply emission factors to convert activity → kg CO₂e.
- Sum by scopes: Scope 1 + Scope 2 (and Scope 3 where relevant).
- Document assumptions and keep evidence to support the results.
